Communication/Cognitive and Education Services
Back to Staff Page

Communication/Cognitive Rehabilitation services at CCS are functionally based and directly related to the goals of the people we serve.  The focus of cognitive rehabilitation includes attention and concentration, orientation and memory, ability to process or understand information, organization of information received, organization and planning of daily information/events, and reasoning/judgement abilities.  All of these areas are critical to daily functioning and can be impacted following a brain injury.  We attempt to rebuild lost skills when possible, or teach alternative strategies or ways to accomplish the tasks at hand.   These services are provided by speech-language pathologists, and assisted by rehabilitation therapists and cognitive aides.

Communication services are provided by licensed speech-language pathologists to assist people to communicate basic needs clearly, identify strategies for word finding problems, understand conversation directed toward them, and find an assistive communication device if oral communication is limited.  For those who are challenged by chewing and/or swallowing foods and liquids, speech-language pathologists are available to execute swallowing or dysphagia training.

Finally, cognitive/behavioral retraining is available through the Adolescent Integration self-contained classroom, and is directed by licensed educational specialists.  The focus of these services is to develop strategies for success in the academic setting, develop and implement individualized and small group curriculum for academic work, and develop self advocacy skills in the educational realm.   All discipline staff within Adolescent Integration assist with designing and implementing cognitive/behavioral strategies in the classroom, whether in the self-contained setting or while participating in the local high school setting.
